The New Zealand Development Tour is an exciting opportunity for Little Athletics Queensland (LAQ) athletes in the U14 and U15 age groups. It is an annual tour conducted by LAQ with athletes in the Team spending approximately 10-12 days travelling, training, and competing together throughout the South Island of New Zealand, against local athletes from all over the Island. For athletes selected to go, it is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to experience a team environment in a sport where individual performance is noramlly the focus.
LAQ has successfully conducted this tour for the past 15 years and both parents and athletes who have previously attended speak highly of the benefits of the tour, not just for their athletic development, but also their social and emotional development. Athletes of all skill levels are encouraged to apply, as this tour provides a development opportunity for all athletes, regardless of their skill level.
A team of up to 30 athletes will be selected for the Tour. Only full LAQ registered athletes in the U14 and U15 age groups are eligible for selection.
The team will be selected solely from those athletes who have nominated. Should nominations exceed 30 athletes, the following selection criteria will be used as a guide. All selections are at the discretion of LAQ.
- Athletes who have displayed exemplary behaviour at Centre, Region and State competitions
- Where possible, an even split of male and female athletes
- Commitment to Little Athletics
- Longevity of service and involvement in Little Athletics
- If the above criteria has been satisfied, priority will be given to U15 athletes due to U14 athletes being eligible to reapply the following year
2026 Tour
Nominations for the 2026 Tour are now open! The tour will take place from Saturday 10th – Monday 19th January. Athletes will spend 10 days training and competing in Christchurch and Nelson.

Little Athletics Australia provides an exciting opportunity for athletes in the Under 15 age group with the National U15 Camp.
This is a live-in elite camp and is a great opportunity to improve athletic skills by providing elite coaching and active participation in athletics. Being held at the Gold Coast Performance Centre, Runaway Bay, means athletes can take full advantage of the world-class facilities on offer. Each day will consist of coaching sessions to enhance performance in chosen events and improve general fitness. Workshops will be held on various topics, such as strength and conditioning and stretching, and there will also be guest appearances by senior elite athletes.
The camp aims to develop and support young athletes who are showing a commitment to the sport and have reached a national standard. Not only will athletes receive expert advice from some of the very best coaches from around Australia, it will be a fun and exciting time, and a chance for athletes to make new friends from all over the country.
The camp is open to selected athletes in the U15 age group each season, who have met a qualifying standard set by Little Athletics Australia. Athletes must be registered LAQ members in the season of the camp.
Combined Event Athletes
Combined Event Athletes from each State will also be nominated based on their placing at the LAQ Combined Event Championships as a U14 athlete.
Multi-Class Athletes
Multi-class athletes in the U15 age group will also be invited to attend the camp. They need to be either formally classified by a recognised organisation prior to being considered for the camp, OR in the process of seeking classification to the satisfaction of LAA prior to the camp. Ideally, athletes will have competed at their Regional or State Championships in the year prior to camp. This will be subject to exemption in the case of injury, exceptional circumstances that meant they weren’t able to compete, or the events in which the athlete is considered to have potential were not offered at Regional or State Championships.
It is worth noting that the selection of ALL athletes will be at the discretion of Little Athletics Australia, and LAQ has no involvement or input into the selection of athletes from our State.
For more information on the camp, visit the Coles Little Athletics Australia websit.
2025 LAQ State Team Guidelines
Little Athletics Queensland is excited to announce its guidelines for the 2025 Coles Australian Athletics Championships to be held in Adelaide. This information is intended for U13, U14 and U15 athletes only. Please not changes have been made since last year to the team composition and selection.
THE TEAM
The Team will comprise of up to 106 athletes in the U13, U14 and U15 age groups as well as up to 13 Managers. LAQ is offering a full team experience for selected athletes in 2025. This means all athletes and managers will travel and accomodate together for the duration of the trip, which will take place from Friday 25th – Monday 28th April 2025. As this is a full team experience, no athlete will be allowed to stay with a parent or family, unless necessary for Multi-Class athletes. There will be no exceptions to this.
The breakdown for each age group is as follows:
Individual Events
U13, U14 & U15: 32 able bodied (16 per gender) per age group and up to 2 Multi-Class athletes (total) per age group.
Combined Events
U15: 4 athletes (2 per gender) for the Combination Event competition. U15 athletes cannot compete in both the individual and combined event competitions, they can only compete in one.
ELIGIBILITY
Athletes must satify the following criteria in the year of selection.
- All U13, U14 and U15 athletes competing in individual events must attend their respective Regional Championships and have attended at least four of their Little Athletics actual Centre competition days prior to these Regional Championships. They must also attend and compete at the LAQ State Championships in the year of selection.
- U15 Combined Event athletes must have attended at least four of their Little Athletics actual Centre competition days prior to the Regional Championships. They must attend and compete in the Heptathlon event at either the LAQ Winter Carnival or LAQ Combined Event Championships.
- There will be no selection based on medical or compassionate grounds. Athletes that do not meet all eligibility criteria will no be considered for selection.
SELECTION FOR ALL ATHLETES
U13, U14 and U15 athletes competing in individual events will be selected based on their results from the 2025 LAQ State Championships, which will be held in Brisbane on the 21st – 23rd March.
Athletes will be selected based on their ability to contribute points to our team. Placing 1st, 2nd or 3rd does not guarantee selection. Because of the limited team size, generally, athletes will not be selected for one event only, therefore, should endeavour to compete in as many events as they can to increase their opportunity of selection in the State Team. Note, this is different to the selection process last year.
Multi-Class athletes must also compete at the 2025 LAQ State Championships and are required to achieve the McDonald’s achievement award blue level standard to be considered for selection. Placing at these Championships does not guarantee selection for Multi Class athletes.
For U15 Combined Event athletes, selection will take place based on results from the 2025 LAQ Combined Event Championships or 2024 LAQ Winter Carnival. Athletes who finished 1st, 2nd and 3rd at the LAQ Combined Event Championships or LAQ Winter Carnival will be eligible for selection, with priority of selection given to the top 2 athletes with the highest overall point score from both competitions.
A maximum of 2 athletes will be selected per event. In addition to the competitions listed above for selection, if necessary, selectors may take performances at other recently held LAQ-sanctioned competitions into consideration in the final selection process. There will be NO selection based on medical or compassionate grounds.
